So I tried on the dress!!!! It was really fun. But none of the hair things I brought looked right. So the hunt is on anew! I found this amazing hair vine by Sara Gabriel at a bridal shop downtown. It's flexible and can be bent in any way you want it...
Corissa Hair Vine It's a serious contender based on flexibility and looks.

I've also heard a lot of great things about Brideshead Revisited. Besides having the coolest name ever - they have a great selection of combs, headbands and veils.

These are their gorgeous feather hair pins. Also a serious contender based on versatility!

Finally here is a headband I saw featured in Martha Stewart. It's from Christina Garcia.

Major points for pure gorgeousness!!! Her website is INTENSE. They have videos of the artisans actually making the designs...and they work HARD. Check it out hereChristina Garcia Designs though based on the website I have a feeling her hair pieces may cost more than my dress. Oh well, a girl can dream right?

Stamps!

I have always been obsessed with stamps! When I was a little kid I had bear and bird stamps that I still have to this day. I recently had a chance to go to a store in the East Village that I've heard a lot about...Casey's Rubber Stamps!

It is a place unlike any other. It's tiny, crowded and dusty filled with books of stamps. It is run by an older Irish man and he's obsessed with stamps! He spends his days making them by hand and his nights drinking with customers who stop by to talk about stamps. He's been looking for a good line drawing of The Flatiron Building to make a stamp out of...if anyone has one he'd like you to let him know! I was able to get a beautiful Chrysler Building stamp...for EIGHT DOLLARS.
I plan to use it on my invitations...have you met any characters planning your wedding?

I'm so excited! I am trying on my dress (and seeing it) for the first time since February! I'm ridiculously nervous...what if I hate it? What if it doesn't fit? What if it's been stolen?!?! I brought all my accessories with me to work. I've got my shoes, jewelery and gloves. I brought a couple options for my hair. I brought a fascinator I bought from ban.do a year ago. I felt super guilty when I bought it, they were $75 back then. Now I think it's one of the best purchases I ever made...I get constant comments on it. Now ban.do has gotten so popular that the same one I bought way back when is twice the price! Mine looks exactly like this...

I'm sitting here with a million work things to accomplish and I'm thinking about my hair! Yes, my hair. I am trying my dress on tomorrow and I really want to experiment with something hair wise. I love the look of the low buns.

Carrie! Looking awesome. Now for some reason I've always hated how my hair looks in pictures when it's up. It seems like I should avoid feeling like that about the wedding pictures. So perhaps down?

I love this style but I'm not sure if it will look right with my dress. Also I'm worried about having my hair get stuck in my face when I dance like crazy woman. Ok so how about half up/half down? This was always my fall back style for middle school productions. I'm loving Penelope's look here. It's simple and elegant. But honestly, I'm not sure if I have enough hair for this...

And finally (and I think this is the winner) is this kinda messy vintagey style.

I could be being influenced by how gorgeous that dress is! I think this style might work. I'm not sure about the ribbon though. I think I need something a little more sophisticated and by sophisticated I mean....SPARKLY. And as someone who wears tiaras, I think people really expect that from me. But man, it's soooo hard to decide!!! Any opinions?

Be-Labored!

Did you have fun last weekend? We didn't go anywhere. But I got to spend some quality time with family and friends which was nice. My FSIL was staying at the hotel where we're thinking of putting some wedding guests. It's very close to our venue, has a nice vibe, and is less than $200 a night.

I'm worried though, that people will want more variety. Like will this be too expensive for some? Or not expensive enough for others? I don't know what to do because New York has SO MANY HOTELS. It's really hard to narrow things down. And because it's NY everything is harder than it needs to be...for example when I tried to reserve a block of rooms at a fancy hotel they told me that no matter what I would have to pay for the FULL COST of the rooms. Even if none of our guests stayed there. Maddening.
I think I am just going to email all the out of town folks and ask them to let me know if they'd like us to book blocks of rooms for them and what kind of hotel they'd prefer.
How are you booking your rooms and informing guests of their options?

I'm working on the escort cards today! Does anyone BEFORE they get married actually know what an escort card is? I sure didn't. Here is a helpful explanation from WeddingBee PRO Laura Hooper!
Clients and wedding guests sometimes wonder about the difference between escort cards and place cards, but it is very simple. Escort cards send your guests to their correct table, while place cards tell them which seat is theirs at the table. It is important to at least have assigned tables, so there is a smooth transition from your ceremony to your reception, without guests wondering where they should sit or with whom.

I am thinking of using the mini taxis as PLACE cards (as I think they'll look really cute with the buildings) and using something else for ESCORT cards.

Is that awesome or what??? Metrocards would be cool but they're too modern - so both Andy and I really want tokens. Since Andy wants everything to be like a ride at Disneyworld he joked about having people put their tokens in an actual turnstile to get from the cocktail hour into the reception. WHAT?! He is insane. Actual tokens and turnstiles are NOT an option for this wedding...but I would love to use the image of a token on paper in some way. I'm thinking of trying to blur out the "Good for One Fare" and put peoples names and the table numbers there. I am however completely inept at photoshop stuff. Perhaps this is an assignment for the groom? What do you think? Good idea or cheesy weird?

Ok - it took me an embarrassingly long time to spell that title! SO I've posted about my love for ebay and now it's time for my REAL love...ETSY! Both the vintage and handmade sections are filled with awesome finds. I wrote about finding my Save the Dates through the Handmade section...but I was also able to find some accessories for the wedding through the vintage section! What did I get you ask?

These were a find - they're in really good condition and they're realllllllly soft. So soft that when I showed them to one of my BM's (a vegan)...she said sadly "These are made from a really cute baby animal aren't they?" Yes. Yes. They are. They're kid leather. Made from (GULP) baby goats. However they are over 50 years old and while I wouldn't buy these new I think they'll add a great vintage vibe to my ensemble! In the olden days, kid leather was considered more fashionable and stylish than satin - and they'll be really warm in January. What do you think?

Our Rehearsal Dinner

We are getting married in Greenwich Village. This is a neighborhood I've always loved - the architecture and the restaurants and parks always make me feel like I've been transported back in time a bit. It means a lot to my fiance too - it's where he grew up, learned to ride a bike, went to school, etc... I'll post more about our venue later BUT I wanted to talk about our rehearsal dinner a bit. My fiances dad is a professor at NYU and he has access to the Alumni Club, appropriately called The Torch Club. He recently had a birthday party and both my FIL's were impressed with the service.

It's located in an old building owned by NYU and it definitely has that "old" vibe I'm looking for. The building dates back to 1891 and used to be a chocolate factory (awesome!) However, I am worried about a couple of things though. Should I decorate at all? I've heard of people bringing in flower arrangements and linens for their rehearsal dinners however I really haven't budgeted for that. To be perfectly honest I kind of want it to be a "No Muss No Fuss" kind of eventbut what do you think? Should I add a more personal touch or do you think it will be all right on its own?

Save the Date for Kate!

I am SO EXCITED to reveal my Save the Dates. They were really a labor of love, but honestly there was no labor involved because the vendors I used were totally AWESOME.
I had toyed around with doing a telegram announcing our wedding.

We loved the idea and I was pretty much ready to go, when Fate somehow steered me to LuckyDuck Letterpress on Etsy.
He's on a break now to plan his wedding but he was sooo easy to work with. We were able to get 150 cards and envelopes for less than $185...and they're LETTERPRESSED.
Here we go...drool.

Andy and I wrote the "copy" He insisted on being referred to as "Industry's Andrew" and I am a Seattle socialite. Far from it in reality...but it makes the whole thing a little more fun.

You may be wondering why it says May 20th as the date in the corner. Well - we procrastinated. And I developed an addiction. It started with just one...and then I couldn't stop. Yes - I cannot avoid telling you. I am addicted to

VINTAGE STAMPS!
It took a while to collect all the ones I wanted. I got so many gorgeous ones. All with a New York theme. I totally loved licking them and placing them on the envelopes. It was super fun.

And now for the final fun piece of the Save the Date. I ordered a custom stamp from
Paperwink. They were also very responsive and professional and I think the finished product is so fun.

I got some distressed ink in blue and here is how it all came together!

Mini Taxis

I thought I would somehow incorporate subway taxis into the place/escort cards. Turns out tokens are HARD to find and kind of expensive for what they are (uh useless!). So then I came up with an idea to use taxis for Escort Cards. A quick search of the internet revealed...this was not an original idea....

These are adorable...but pricey. They cost $48 for 12 at plumparty ...hmmm....I still really liked the idea & I've been playing around with paper a bit (it is easier to hide while working at my office heh) and I thought maybe I could just print out a picture.... But THEN I found this!

Perfect! I picked up a few and started folding. Here is what I have so far....
Cute right? i played around with making them bigger and smaller on the xerox machine but I really like the original size best. I didn't put the taxi label on the top because I think I want to put the actual cards with names on them to the top of the taxi. Like this...
I printed these out and cut a tab in the bottom along with a slit in the taxi for it to go through. Now I only have to make 100 more of these bad boys. I'd like to find a nicer card to attach to the taxi - something that brings together the New York theme and formality of the event. Any ideas?

Paper Flowers - Subway Style

We have the wire buildings in place... but I wanted to find something to surround them. I went into Anthropologie the other day and they had some paper garlands made from a subway map and I thought "CENTERPIECE IDEA" So here's what I came up with.

First I printed out this IRT map from 1939.

THEN - I cut put a bunch of circles using my morning yogurt (delicious and functional!)

Using the directions in this post from Craftstylish I created the flowers. I actually used scissors and tape on these cause I'm lazy but a craft knife glue would probably look better.

I then poked a paperclip through the middle as a totally improvised stem. I'll probably use green wire for the real thing. and VOILA! (Sorry for the blurry photo...I have shaky caffeine hands)

I think paper is such a great resource for decorating. It's versatile and recycled or recyclable! What do you think? Are you using paper in any innovative ways at your wedding?

Bridesmaids...Get it On!

A huge weight has been lifted off my shoulders...almost half my ladies have their dresses! I thought about picking them out for them but after a couple stressful shopping trips to J Crew and Saks - I let it go (it's hard for me!) and asked them to pick their own dresses with these requirements:

Colors: Blue or Gray. More towards sapphire blue / royal blue / steel blue than navy. Also pewter and silver are options as well. Like this gorgeous little color card from the brilliant Inspired Bride

As for style - I would love it to have a 30's / 40's look but anything classic and vintage-y is fine. I think full length is the only thing set so far.

Ok so anyways - we aren't models / rock stars and I want my little maids to be comfy and dancing and glowy all night. I can't show you what my friends purchased cause they're slightly REVEALING but I'm happy to show you a dress I bought for my sister. It sells for around 200 retail but I got mine on eBay for $60 buckaroonis.

It's great quality and really fits in with the diaphanous glam of the other dresses. I also love the color - it's between blue/gray and purple. I love it!
Now with all these gorgeous dresses floating around I'm curious as to how to make my Maid of Honor stand out...any ideas???

One of the "FourSistersCrafting" is getting married in October. I am her Maid of Honor. I've been looking for some dresses to fit in with her theme...and to complement her awesome dress. I made this little inspiration board on a great site called Shopstyle.

I have used Shopstyle to hunt for everything from clothes to desks. It's awesome because you can search a bunch of different stores like Nordstrom and Anthropologie by Price, Sales, Color etc...You can also set up Sales Alerts to be notified when something you like lands in your price range. Genius!

City of Wire

It's really interesting how my ideas have changed over the course of crafting. First I was all about branches and snow. Then we had the cardboard city scape - which was awesome but also kinda looked like a Burger King crown. Then one day, I noticed my Mom had some wire buildings in her apartment....that looked pretty cool.

I asked her where she got it from...figuring she had picked it up at an expensive art store and she said "TARGET!". WHOA, TARGET, I LOVE YOU!!!!! We picked up ten more for about $30 each. We are also using 14" mirrors that we are sharing with my sisters wedding in October. She sent me a picture of what they look like...a prototype if you will. The actual mirror will be round. I think they still need some oompf! Maybe I'll work in the Subway Map flowers, But I'm excited about creating mini cityscapes at each table.

New York means so much to both Andy and I. He was born here, in fact we are getting married right next to the apartment he grew up in. While I'm a transplant I love it too. It's my home, more than anywhere else I've ever lived.

When I first moved to Manhattan I had an amazing view of The Chrysler Building. Now many years later I can see The Chrysler Building from our home in Brooklyn. It is in my opinion the most beautiful building in New York - I love the Art Deco lines and the gleaming silver.
As I thought more about it I realized how much other Art Deco New York things I loved - even the grates I walk over when I head to work!

Thinking about this led me towards an Art Deco theme for the wedding.

Recently my friend and I were talking about what deodorant we use. Is that weird? Anyways - we got into an argument about which ones were bad for us and we input some of our favorite cosmetics into this database: http://www.cosmeticsdatabase.com/index.php?nothanks=1. It shows you the level of toxicity in each product and let me just say, the result were HORRIFYING. I had thought my trusty old standby SPEED STICK was safe (something about no aluminum) but it turns out it is pretty nasty.

Ingredients used by this brand cause:

Developmental/reproductive toxicity
Allergies/immunotoxicity

Other concerns for ingredients used by this brand:
Neurotoxicity, Endocrine disruption, Persistence and bioaccumulation, Organ system toxicity (non-reproductive), Irritation (skin, eyes, or lungs), Contamination concerns

This has all prompted me to try using the CRYSTAL…available at health stores.

It’s basically like a giant piece of salt that you wet and then put in your underarms. Do I need to say DON’T use it immediately after shaving? It hurts. Like rubbing salt…in ah uh OPEN WOUND. Besides that I’ve been quite happy. I smell a LITTLE…(hey it’s summer and I’m a meat eater) but not so much that I’m particularly bothered by it. And hey, why do we ladies all have to smell good all the time? The fragrances in most products are extremely harmful and cause cancer. I bet if you asked men if they’d prefer a woman smelling good or having boobs, they’d choose boobs every time.

I've been moving towards a more cohesive theme for the wedding. VINTAGE NEW YORK! No more nature...(flowers are too expensive in the winter!) I can't wait to show you my Save the Dates, they're awesome! But first...CENTERPIECES!

We used a city scape that I purchased from MOMA and traced it onto cardstock. I then put my fake tea lights inside (no fire risk!) What do you think? Any thoughts on making it better?

Paper Flowers All?

With our flower bill creeping upwards of 3000 (eeeek!) my friend Katherine and I decided to experiment with the crepe paper flowers a couple nights ago. Directions from Martha Stewart...

Results were mixed...the silver paper did not work as well as the colored. Also we used a coffee scoop instead of a styrofoam ball, but they didn't look so bad...And Katherines were much better than mine. I attached some birds my Mom and I bought. But here are our results.

Here's my second try...I bought some Instant Snow when we were visiting Connecticut. First of all it looks totally real. Second it's really fun to play with. I put it in the glass vase and added some water droplet ornaments I have from Smith and Hawken. Voila!

Still not colorful enough for me though...perhaps I will have to spring for those tulips after all....

It's actually cooled down today so let's think WINTER. This has been a surprisingly difficult aspect of planning the wedding...imagining it being cold! Today I'm thinking of the centerpeices. I want them to be low. I would prefer not to use flowers because I am broke like everyone else in America. So I am starting out with this idea:

I've seen these around town and I thought they looked neat...but I also thought..."Huh I bet I can make that" So I gathered some branches from the park in front of my apartment, spray painted them silver and stuck them in a beautiful pewter vase. I put a silver ribbon around the base. I then added some beads I had, a little bird that Nina made and some candles on the side. This is the result.

Yeah I know...looks like a disaster. The projector in the background doesn't help. This is the moment when crafters say "Oh...I guess it's not going to be that easy" and you either give up and buy the damn thing OR you spend more time and more money making it perfect. So after debating whether this is salvageable I'm going to continue. I think the basic idea is good....the silver branches look great up close. I want to take down the height (low centerpieces should be no higher that 12" says Colin Cowie!) use a different vase (I'm going to try a round glass one) and figure out a different decorative option. The first thing I'm going to try is beaded flowers or the subway paper flowers.
In the end...I want it to look something like this:

Sweater

Here is the sweater I have been working on since the summer. I still need to finish the front bands. I "designed" it (i.e. made it up as I went along) and knitted from the top down. It's pretty different from my original idea, which I thought would be much roomier and longer. The yarn was salvaged from a rummage sale sweater.

I first saw these handmade vintage telegrams at Lucky Duck Letterpress...
Aren't they COOOOOL? Turns out, 100 would only cost $150 which is a deal in wedding land.
However, since then I've stumbled onto this amazing site...
They offer free customizable downloads of vintage "props" mainly documents like vintage passports, library cards, drivers license, etc... But they have two types of telegrams. And they're both SO COOL!

These would make an awesome customizable invite, decoration for a birthday party, a gift tag, or costume prop! How about being Paul Brinkman Prohibition officer for Halloween?
The possibilities for fun are endless!

It looks easier that it is. Books are purchased at the Strand on the dollar racks. We try to find ones with cool inside pages (like maps) if possible. Not including glue-ing time, I get usually finish 1 book in under an hour. 25 down - 35 to go by June!

I made this two nights ago. It is a baby owlbear. An owlbear is a weirdo monster in Dungeons and Dragons that is ... everyone together now.... part OWL, part BEAR. Most hardcore Dungeons and Dragons gamers hate it because they think it's ridiculous. But I love it because it's ridiculous. And hey, don't hate on the owlbear. Owlbears are monsters too.

These adorable little stuffed birds would make really fun favors, or centerpieces, or cake toppers. I found it at this neat DIY weddings web site: i-do-it-yourself.com. The ones pictured are some kind of designer purchase, but they have a pdf pattern for making your own.
